My Skincare Routine - Korean Skincare

Aloha Friends!  I last shared my skincare routine with you back in January, and in the past six/seven months, it's COMPLETELY changed, so I'm back today to share with you my newest skincare routine!

Today's post won't be as detailed and concise as my last skincare routine post, because there's a lot of products to talk about, but I'll try my best to explain how I use the products and what I use them for.  I included "Korean Skincare" in the title of this post because most, but not all, of my skincare products are from Korean brands.  I use more Korean/Asian brands because I think they work better for my Asian skin, just as Asian cosmetics do.  It might just be in my head, but I think they're better lol.  Of course there are a few Western brands that snuck their way into my skincare routine, but everyone knows that Korean skincare is like 100000000x better than Western skincare anyways... All Korean products are labeled with [K-BEAUTY] before their explanations, but I think that's pretty obvious... Before we get started, I just want to mention the golden skincare rule, and that is to stay hydrated! Drink lots of water and it'll make such a difference in your skin!  I promise!  So without further ado, let's get into it!

CLEANSERS:
So I'm starting with cleansers because they're like the number two most important part of my skincare routine.  I use four different cleansers, but not all at once, of course, and they all have different uses.

The first cleanser is Neutrogena Ultra Light Cleansing Oil.  This cleanser is step one of my double-cleansing routine, which I also talked about in my last skincare routine post.  You're supposed to use it on a dry face, to cleanse away makeup, then mix a bit of water with what you have left on your hands and face to emulsify the oil, resulting in a milky cleanser.  I only use this cleanser when I'm wearing makeup, because it's purpose is to pretty much remove makeup.  That being said, I don't use eye makeup removing liquids anymore since I started using this oil cleanser because I found that the oil cleanser is less harsh on my skin and does a better job of removing my makeup - even super stubborn waterproof makeup.

[K-BEAUTY] The second cleanser I use in my double-cleansing routine is TonyMoly Whipping Cotton Brightening Bubble Foam.  This foaming cleanser is really light and airy, and does a really good job of cleansing away any residue from my oil cleanser, though there really isn't any residue at all.  I honestly haven't noticed any brightening effects but I really like that it's a really light cleanser that doesn't dry out my face.

On no makeup days, I go for Biore Baking Soda Pore Cleanser.  To be very honest, I'm not a huge fan of this cleanser because it's a little too harsh and drying for me, but I keep using it because I can't return it lol.  It's not that it's a bad cleanser or anything, but it's just not really for my skin.  That being said, it does it's job to wash away any gunk and dirt that's accumulated throughout the day.

For mornings, I use Alba Botanica Hawaiian Pineapple Enzyme Cleanser.  It's another cleanser that's on the lighter side, which is perfect for morning cleansing, since there isn't a lot to cleanse.  I used to use this cleanser at night too until I switched to foam cleanser, but I've actually found that I prefer to use it in the mornings.  It has a light pineapple scent that's really pleasant after you've just woken.

SKINCARE:
I just titled this section "skincare" because I couldn't think of what else to call it... But anyways, this section includes all of the serum, toner, moisturizers, etc. that I use after cleansing.  These products are mainly part of my night time skincare routine.

[K-BEAUTY] After cleansing, I tone with Etude House Wonder Pore Freshener.  I apply a bit on a cotton round and let it suck up all the makeup and dirt that held onto my face during cleansing.  This toner really does pick up everything and doesn't leave my face with a film-y or dry feeling after.

[K-BEAUTY] Serum is the next step for me, and I looooove Holika Holika One Solution Super Energy Ampoule - Whitening.  For those who don't know, serums and ampoules are technically the same thing, but ampoules are basically supercharged serums, so there are more active ingredients in them, which I why I personally prefer to use them.  I really love this whitening ampoule because it really brightens my skin and smells AMAZING.

Moisturizer is the number one most important part of my skincare routine because I have combination skin, and the dry parts of my face are definitely more problematic than the oily parts.  I use Garnier Skinactive Moisture Rescue Refreshing Gel-Cream and oh my god is it one of the best moisturizers I've ever tried.  I was an avid Clinique Moisture Surge user before, like nothing could replace it, but now I am changed.  This Garnier moisturizer is so light yet so moisturizing and doesn't have the chemical smell that haunted the Clinique moisturizer and is a fraction of the price.  This is also the only product I use after my morning cleansing.

[K-BEAUTY] This next product is they key product to my skincare routine, and it's TonyMoly Panda's Dream White Magic Cream.  Yes, this is a whitening cream, but that's not the only reason I use it.  I do use it for it's whitening purposes, because although I am one of those almost translucent Asians, I do like to keep it up.  Basically, I don't like being tan.  I also use this because I have some redness along my jawline that has been there my entire life, but this whitening cream has helped to lighten the redness.  I can't say however, that this cream has whitened my skin, but rather I've noticed that it just helps to keep me from getting tanner.

[K-BEAUTY] The last step to my skincare routine is TonyMoly Panda's Dream So Cool Eye Stick. This eye stick is basically an eye serum in a cooling stick form, which makes it versatile for morning, night, or just to refresh during the day.  I generally only swipe this eye stick under my eyes before bed, but also like to use it in the mornings when my eyes look puffy.  Honestly, I don't see this eye stick making a noticeable difference in my undereye area, but it's nice to use so I just keep using it lol.

SPECIAL SKINCARE:
Below are a few products that are still a part of my skincare routine, but not for everyday.  They are products I use one to two times a week or only when necessary.

Dry, peel-y lips are always horrible, especially if you love wearing matte liquid lipstick like me, and the weather, whether hot or cold, is never a friend to my lips, which is why I use e.l.f. Lip Exfoliator. I use this product whenever I need it, so it isn't necessarily part of my skincare routine, but I do use it at night sometimes.  It helps to clean away any flakey parts of my lips by gently exfoliating away the dead skin.  This isn't the best lip exfoliator I've used, but it does a great job for only costing $3 and it comes in a variety of flavors - I have the cherry one!  After exfoliating my lips, I always follow up with Smith's Rosebud Salve.  I actually use this every night as a sort of lip mask because I always wake up with super soft, moisturized lips!

Whenever I have little breakouts, I always turn to my favorite Mario Badescu Drying Lotion to get rid of them.  I first heard about this product from Jen FrmHeadToToe YEARS AGO and have used it ever since.  All you do it dip a q-tip through to the pink powder then dab it onto your zits and go to sleep!  When you wake up, the pimple should be decreased in size and less painful, though it may take a couple of uses to have affect on larger breakouts.  Using drying lotion has helped me to stop popping pimples and creating scars on my face.

Once a week I use pore strips to get rid of the stubborn blackheads that have accumulated on my nose, but before I do so, I use Kate Somerville ExfoliKate exfoliator.  I find that doing so helps to "loosen" the blackheads which allows the pore strip to pull more gunk out.  As for pore strips, I've used tons of different kinds and my favorite is the Biore Deep Cleansing Charcoal Pore Strips, but right now I'm finishing up a box of up & up Pore Cleansing Strips because the box comes with 14 pieces for only $6.  They aren't bad, but if I don't exfoliate before using them, I find that they don't do as thorough of a job.

Finally, I get to talk about my favorite skincare product in the entire world, and that is... MASKS! I've been obsessed with masks for as long as I can remember because they're such a small thing, but they feel so pampering.  Sheet masks are my favorite, though I do love a good peel-off or wash-off mask every now and then.  My favorite wash-off masks are Laniege Water Sleeping Mask and Glamglow Supermud Clearing Treatment.  The Laniege sleeping mask, pictured above, is amazing because it works to moisturize your skin while you sleep and you'll wake up with beautifully moisturized skin, but don't forget to wash it off when you wake up because it can clog pores.  I love the Glamglow mask because you can see it working on your skin and there is a visible difference after you wash it off.  It does have quite a price tag though (which I why I haven't used it in a while lol).  But like I mentioned, sheet masks are my favorite.  I've included a photo of a couple of my favorite sheet masks above; Forencos 7 Days Mask Teatree Relax Silk Mask (YES THE SONG JOONGKI ONE!!!), Holika Holika Juicy Mask Sheet in Blueberry, and The Face Shop Little Mermaid Hydrating Face Mask.

And there are all the products in my skincare routine!  It's a lot of stuff, right?  But it's honestly so worth it because I've noticed a visible difference in my skin once I incorporated more products into my skincare routine.  To conclude this post I want to honestly recommend incorporating more Korean skincare products in your routines because they're just so much better than Western skincare products, but that's not to say that there isn't good Western products, but I haven't found a K-beauty product that hasn't worked wonders on my skin, but it's just a recommendation!  Lastly, like I mentioned at the beginning of this post, drinking more water is the best thing you can do for your skin, so drinks lots and lots of water!

As always, thanks for much for reading!

With Love,

PLAY! by Sephora: July 2017 Box

Aloha Friends!  It's that time of the month again... it's PLAY! by Sephora box overview time!

This post was originally supposed to go up on Wednesday, but EXO took over my life and I couldn't wait to post their album review, and if you haven't read it yet, CLICK HERE or scroll down below this post!  ANYWAYS...  I got July's PLAY! box and of course as always, I'm back to tell you guys all about it!
This month's box's theme is "Beauty Staycation" and that's honestly all the little pamphlet gave me lol.  There are a few tips about vacations and staycations, but nothing really about how each product is relevant to the box's theme.  The pouch this month is really cute, it's a fun baby pink picnic blanket checkered print with "Glamp Out" printed on top.  "Glamp Out" confused me because I thought this box's theme was staycations, aka vacations at home, but then the pouch implies "glamping" or glam-camping??  Maybe I'm reading too into it, but it's kind of confusing and I still don't know how the products are relevant, but anyways, let's learn more about what else was in July's PLAY! by Sephora box!

"It's Eye Time"
IT Cosmetics Superhero Elastic Stretch Volumizing Mascara
This mascara claims to be an innovative lengthening mascara that "gives lashes volume, reach, and lift with just one inky-black coat".  It contains collagen, biotin, and peptides to give lashes more visible lift.  If you've read my past PLAY! by Sephora overviews, you'd know that I don't generally like the mascaras that come in PLAY! boxes because they're usually HUGE brushes with heavy formulas, but surprisingly, this mascara has a relatively slim brush and what seems to be a lighter formula so I'm a little more excited about trying it.  It's also IT Cosmetics, which is a brand all my friends rave about but one that I haven't tried yet!

"Pore What It's Worth"
Boscia Charcoal Pore Pudding Intensive Wash-Off Treatment
This mask is swirled with black and white charcoal that supposedly "balances skin's moisture, absorbs impurities, and minimizes the appearance of pores".  It claims to be ideal for ridding skin of dirt and sweat, by purifying, but is also gentle enough for sensitive skin.  I was so excited to see this mask in the box this month because 1), we haven't gotten a mask in the box in a while, 2), the last mask was terrible, and 3), Boscia is a highly raved about skincare brand that I've always wanted to try.  This mask LOOKS especially intriguing and I honestly don't want to ruin the beautiful black and white swirls, but I'm definitely going to try this mask tonight!

"Condition Accomplished"
Briogeo Rosarco Milk Reparative Leave-In Conditioning Spray
This leave-in conditioning spray claims to be ultra-light and non-greasy that will moisturize your hair without weighing it down.  It also contains coconut, rose, and argan oils that will reduce frizz and flyaways.  It doesn't explain what rosarco milk is, and I don't even know what it is, and I can't find anything about what it is so I guess we all have to live in mystery.  It smells nice though so I'm looking forward to trying it.  Also fun fact: "condition accomplished" was misspelled in the PLAY! pamplet...

"Nude Hued"
bareMinerals GEN NUDE Matte Liquid Lipcolor in Swag
This liquid lippie is cream to matte and claims to stay all day while being lightweight yet full coverage.  It contains plant based waxes and moisturizing ingredients that will counteract dryness.  I was so excited when I saw this in the box because you all already know how much I love liquid lippies, and I was especially excited that it was a soft mauve nude aka my favorite lipcolor to wear.  I actually tried this lippie before writing this and I LOVE the color.  It feels really nice on the lips, like a cream lipstick, but I found that even after waiting 5-10 minutes for it to set, like it says on the pamphlet, it still transferred onto the back of my hand and never really completely dried down. Maybe I still had lipbalm leftover on my lips that was keeping it from drying, but I was sad to see that it transferred.  That all being said, it was only my first time trying it, so no completely negative reviews yet.  It's also such a beautiful, natural color that even if it does wear off, it wears with dignity, and you won't have to worry about people noticing that half your lipstick is gone.

"All Wet To Go"
Milk Makeup Cooling Water
This "hydrating gel stick refreshes and soothes skin for a quick boost of moisture when you're on the go".  Basically, this is a cooling stick, similar to the TonyMoly Panda Cooling Eye Stick that I'm obsessed with.  It's great for when you're under the sun or when you've had ramyun at 12AM or if you've been up all night crying over EXO... and your eyes are a little puffy.  When I saw this in the box I was honestly less than impressed because I already had a product that's pretty much exactly the same, but at a much lower price point.  I swiped it under my eyes to give it a try and found that it's a little stickier than my TonyMoly one and I'm not really a fan of that...  I did only try it that once, so I'll be incorporating it into my skincare routine to see if it can live up.

This Month's Perfume Pick: "Put It To The Zest"
Atelier Cologne Orange Sanguine
"Inspired by the scent of a relaxed summer morning, this crisp blend of sweet blood orange and bitter orange peel is complemented by notes of geranium."
Fragrance Family: Fresh
Top Notes: Blood Orange, Bitter Orange
Middle Notes: Geranium, Jasmine
Base Notes: Sandalwood, Amber Woods
If this ain't your first rodeo, you're familiar with that fact that I don't usually smell the perfumes that come in the PLAY! boxes, but for some reason, I actually smelled this month's and REALLY LIKE IT.  It's light and fruity, but it's still not a fragrance that I'd wear, but would really like it as a home scent.  It also came with a really cute postcard (pictured above) that had some French on the back, but I don't know French so I couldn't tell you what it said lol.

And that is everything that is in July 2017's PLAY! by Sephora box!  Everything in this box was actually pretty impressive and new to me, which is super exciting because I can try five new products!

As always, thanks for reading!

With Love,
Caitlyn <3

Cat Reviews: EXO - THE WAR - The 4th Album

ALOHA FRIENDS!  IM SO EXCITED THAT I NEED TO TYPE IN ALL CAPS SO YOU GUYS CAN FEEL MY EXCITEMENT!!!!! EXO'S NEW ALBUM IS OUT AND IM SO DEAD RIGHT NOW BUT OF COURSE I HAVE TO WRITE A REVIEW SO HERE I AM. (I honestly hate this gif)

WAIT! CLICK HERE to listen to EXO's THE WAR while you read!

Okay so apologies for the all caps intro, but it was necessary, like the most necessary thing in the world.  Also, *WARNING* this is going to be an EXTREMELY biased review, being as I'm an EXO-L, therefore there is absolutely no way I can write this unbiased.

So with all that out of the way, I'm honestly so so soooo excited to be reviewing EXO'S newest album THE WAR!  EXO was due up for a comeback, since their last release was December 2016, and I'm like 100000% sure that this album is going to be the only album I listen to for the rest of the summer.  The digital version of THE WAR, as well as the KO KO BOP music video was released on the July 18, at 6PM KST, and that was 2AM PST so I was asleep, but I did watch and listen AS SOON AS I woke up.  I heard the first two songs and needed to take a break because I was just so shook beyond belief, but once I took a few breaths and starred at the ceiling for a solid ten minutes, I was able to continue on.  I've been awake for like 4 hours and it's the only thing I've listened to all morning, so I definitely listened enough times to be able to write a comprehensive review for you.  So my fellow EXO-Ls and not-EXO-Ls, let's get on with the review!

An Overview and Album Artwork
Like I mentioned above, the digital version of THE WAR came out this morning at 6PM KST/2AM PST.  It features nine songs, including the title track, KO KO BOP.  This album's style is majorly different from past EXO albums, like EXTREMELY different, but in the best way possible.  THE WAR is definitely a summer album, because it's jam packed with upbeat, exciting songs.  There are no ballads on this album, but there is one song that's more on the slower side, but not slow enough to be considered a ballad.  As for the album artwork, the digital album features EXO's hexagonal logo made of bird's of paradise.  The Korean version has a white background and the Chinese version has a black background.  I personally LOVE their logo themes this comeback, because I love flowers, leaves, and that type of aesthetic, so it matches me well.  The physical version of the album releases tomorrow (for me, today for you) July 19th.  Of course I preordered my copy (hurray for 800,000 preordered albums!!!!) and I'll be writing about that once it is in my possession, but to give you a quick idea about it, there are three versions, Regular Ver. A, Regular Ver. B, and Private Ver.  The Private version includes photos taken by the members and members' comments (I think??).  I ordered the Private version, but more on that in a later post!  The concept/teaser photos for this comeback were SO GOOD.  I'll include them at the end of this post but oh my god I'm dead.

The Songs:
1. 전야 前夜 The Eve
The Eve really surprised me, I don't know why though lol.  I think it suits being the first song in the album, because it really draws your attention in with it's beat that makes your head bop and it's really strong vocals (but let's be real, every EXO song has strong vocals).  Kyungsoo oppa slays this song, but when doesn't he slay?

2. Ko Ko Bop
Ko Ko Bop is this album's title track, and definitely deserves to be.  Of course SM teased the hell outta this song so it was no surprise that I absolutely loved it when I finally heard the full song.  I love that it has ups and downs, it's starts off real chill then it gets more exciting, then is chill again.  It's honestly a really great song.  "Shimmy shimmy Ko Ko Bop, I think I like it" is definitely my favorite line in this entire song.  The music video for Ko Ko Bop is also AMAZING but also kinda weird and trippy (i.e. the floating burgers???).  I was really confused about what this album's concept would be, because of the thousands of fan theories I read, but was really pleasantly surprised by the tropical theme.  I'm just disappointed that there isn't a lot of choreo scenes in the MV, but there was Kim Kai abs, so I guess that makes up for it.  Also my bby looks so good frjieoafejkra.  Watch the music video on the sidebar or here!

3. What U do?
I'm trying so hard not be be biased when writing reviews for each song, but I can't with this one BECAUSE I LOVE THIS SONG SO MUCH.  This was the song that was featured in Suho oppa's teaser and Chanyeol oppa singing "사랑해" got me so bad that I knew as soon as I heard What U do that it would be my favorite song on the album, and boy do I know myself well.  THIS IS MY FAVORITE SONG.  It's super happy and upbeat and the lyrics are SO CUTE.  "Don't change any of your everything, keep looking at me like you do now, there's no reason, you're all I need" LIKE HOW FREAKING CUTE IS THAT UGH.  I seriously just love this song so so so so so so so so so much guys I don't even know what to do with myself.  If you don't love this song, we seriously cannot be friends because omg.  It's another one of those song that has that "Forever 21 hot fitting room" type of vibe, but in the best way possible.  I'm hoping they use it as their lead up song for music programs.  You just have to listen to it to understand. It's so good frhieoghrueilghrueilwhfirehfuershgvurshgurielsghurslgh.

4. Forever
Before I listened to Forever, I read tons of tweets about Chanyeol oppa's rap in this song, and of course, since I'm his wife, I had to investigate what the big deal was and oh my lord Sehun.  OH. MY. LORD. SEHUN.  (this has nothing to do with Sehun, but y'all know Sehun is a lord right??)  His rap is so good, but when is it not?  To be very honest with you, this is not my favorite song on this album, but if you've read my reviews of other K-Pop albums, you're aware that I'm not really into these types of songs anyways, so no secret??  I do however, really like the opening line, "you can be my only star".

5. 다이아몬드 Diamond
When I first listened to Diamond, I wasn't a fan, because it's just one of thooose songs that I'm not really into until I hear it several times, but now I really like it!  I realize how ingenuous my "I really like it!" sounds, but I promise you that I do really like it.  Kyungsoo oppa's voice always gets me so good, but his chorus in Diamond is especially good this time.  Also the line "Blinding, blinding, you're like a diamond" is so cute in it's own way?  To be honest though, the rap in this song is nooooot my favorite, but it's kinda trap style?? Idk my rap terms that well, but it's just like not my fave.

6. 너의 손짓 Touch It
Like with Forever, I saw a lot about Touch It on Twitter before having heard it in full - like ChanKaiSoo's dance from One Summer Night so to no surprise, I really liked it when I finally heard it.  It has a really chill, summer vibe to it, like it's one of those songs that you'd listen to while chilling by the pool, but not a HSM2 "All For One" pool party type songs.  Does that make sense?? Anyways, I realize now that I really suck at reviewing songs, but ya.  Touch It is one of my favorite songs on this album because I guess I've been into chill, summer songs lately lol.

7. 소름 Chill
I'm going to be honest and tell you that I honestly don't know what to write for this song because it's good, and like that's all I have to say??  Chanyeol oppa's rap is really good, but the absolute best part of Chill is Kyungsoo oppa's RAP.  YEAH I SAID RAP.  I'm still so shook by it like who tf told him he could rap??? Tao is shaking in his boots right now.

8. 기억을 걷는 밤 Walk On Memories
I had nothing to write for Chill but Walk On Memories is a different story.  This is the one song that's a little slower, but not slow enough to be a ballad, but I still really appreciate it.  There's something sensual (I shuttered as I wrote that) about it that draws me to it (still shuttering).  It's about remembering old memories with someone you love, which makes the song super dreamy and easy to listen to.  Upon hearing the melody at first, you'd think it'd be a sad song, but it's not and there's something really nice about that.  Also the "do it do it do it do it do it" part in the chorus would make you think that the song is about the, ehem, deed, if you don't understand the rest of the lyrics, but it's not.  I promise you that it's not lol.  Chanyeol oppa's verse is my favorite part :)

9. 내가 미쳐 Going Crazy
Ahhhh the last song of the album...  I'm going to be straight up and tell you that this is my least favorite song in this album.  It's just one of those songs that I'm not that into and I don't really know why.  Not to say that it's not a good song because it is, it's just that I'm like not into songs like this??  I do really like Chanyeol oppa's rollercoaster line, because I'm a sucker for whenever he mixes English into anything, but I'm also a sucker for anything he does so...  That all being said, I think Going Crazy is the perfect last song for this album, especially because of how it ends with that low piano note like BOOM DONE.

Picking Favorites:
So by now I'm sure you can gather what my favorites are, but as always, here are my ranks for the songs in THE WAR.

1. What U do? (y'all already know lol)
2. 기억을 걷는 밤 Walk On Memories
3. 너의 손짓 Touch It
4. Ko Ko Bop
5. 소름 Chill
6. 다이아몬드 Diamond
7. 전야 前夜 The Eve
8. Forever
9. 내가 미쳐 Going Crazy

Final Thoughts:
Overall, I really loved this EXO album and it really fit it's summer, tropical concept well.  It's packed with upbeat, happy songs, which of course is what you'd want from a summer album.  That being said, I do feel like this song lacked a ballad song that would've made this album even better than what it already is.  Walk On Memories is as close as we can get to a ballad, but it's not quite there, and that one lack is the only thing I don't like about this album.  Other than that, I'll definitely be listening to this album for the rest of the summer (and beyond, let's be real) and highly recommend it.  There's supposedly a bonus track coming out, Sehun said midnight, but idk about him so we'll see lol, but I'm praying it's the one ballad song I NEED.  For Life is still my favorite EXO album and nothing can replace it.

As always, thanks so much for reading!  What do you think about EXO's new album, THE WAR?  Let me know in the comments or tweet me @thecaitlynlee!  I'd love to know what your favorite songs are from the album!

As promised, here are EXO's teaser photos for this comeback!  Click the photos to enlarge them! (Grab a snack, I mean the pics below are snacks but like grab yourself a real snack cause there's A LOT of pictures lol)
